Catalog Services Department 2002 Goals

The Catalog Department is responsible for the cataloging and maintenance of all monographic and serial library materials, print and electronic (with the exception of fine arts monographs and manuscripts), authority control for all LIBROS consortium libraries, firm/form orders receiving and Ibero blanket order receiving, and gift processing. Italicized headings indicate new goals.

Cataloging

  • Work with Collection Management in establishing cataloging priorities
  • Catalog rush and priority materials
  • Catalog monographic purchases/gifts on first-in, first-out basis
  • Catalog serials/e-journals purchases/gifts on first-in, first-out basis
  • Catalog/retrocon CSWR print and microfilm materials
  • Merge CSWR and Bell
  • Process gifts
  • Continue in-house retrocon of serial titles
  • Continue to work on problems created by the vendor retrospective conversion of the collection
  • Do in-house retrocon of monographic titles generated by on the flys
  • Do in-house selected retrocon of monographic titles excluded from vendor contract (analytics, incomplete shelflist cards, non-Roman language cards, etc.)
  • Evaluate vendor cataloging/processing of Yankee firm order books for science and business
  • Complete Columbian Quincentenary collection project
  • Catalog old print serials which have been reselected
  • Complete processing of old Ibero legal materials backlog
  • Support cataloging the Kirtland Mammalogy Collection in the Museum of Southwestern Biology
  • Implement 856 |y field (affects 100,000 records)
  • Process call number error list for the consortium (affects 30,000 records)
  • Process cataloging error print-outs generated by catalogers
  • Investigate a better way to compile LIBROS generated cataloging statistics
  • Stop production of shelflist cards for all CSWR locations (IQUD, IQUA, IQUK, IQUW, IQUL)
  • Investigate LIBROS display of the 780/785 fields
  • Add UNM Gallup to LIBROS consortium
  • Investigate migration to Millennium and "new" OCLC cataloging subsystem
  • Process Frank Waters Collection

National Contribution

  • Contribute to OCLC Enhance
  • Contribute PCC bibliographic records—with emphasis on original and vendor records
  • Contribute NACO and SACO authority records
  • Serve on the BIBCO Operations Committee (Cataloging Resouces Coordinator)
  • Participate in CONSER cataloging training (Head of E-resources Section)
  • Participate in LCSH training workshop for Latin American Libraries at the Library of Congress (Head of Ibero Section)
  • Translate CONSER and SACO cataloging manuals into Spanish (Head of Ibero Section)

Receiving

  • Receive firm/form order books
  • Receive Latin American firm/form order books and Blanket order books
  • Receive gift books
  • Implement the receiving of shelfready form selection books for science and business

LIBROS Maintenance

  • Create items for newly cataloged monographs
  • Process adds, transfers, withdrawals, bindery books, and bindery on-the-fly
  • Correct LIBROS records
  • Process problems identified by INNOPAC project lists
  • Label/relabel materials
  • Process on the flys

Authority Control

  • Download/edit authority records for UNMGL and the Consortium
  • Process the following INNOPAC lists daily: Blind Reference, Duplicate Headings, First-time use Headings, Invalid Headings

Department

  • Assess the needs of the department (computers, training, furnishing, etc.)
  • Revise/create policies and procedures

Administrative Priorities

  • Continue to refine the Department's Web page
  • Continue participation in DILARES
  • Continue participation in collection management
  • Continue participation in CTS
  • Establish a new cataloging quality control program (Cataloging Resources Coordinator)
  • Evaluate e-serials cataloging (aggregators)
  • Participate in career ladder training
  • Train staff in Ibero receiving to perform 050 cataloging
  • Dept. head to be acting Head of Ibero Section (Sept. 2002-Feb. 2003)
  • Investigate cataloging of subset of map collection
