Political Archives
With more than 5,000 linear feet of research materials, the Center for Southwest Research Political Archives includes the extensive papers of Senators Clinton P. Anderson, Thomas B. Catron, Dennis Chávez, Joseph Montoya, Harrison “Jack” Schmitt, and Pete Domenici; and of Representatives Manuel Luján, Steve Schiff, and Heather Wilson. While most of the records are about the Senate or House of Representatives proceedings, some also include information on family and private activities, including business transactions.
The papers of other political leaders, attorneys and business men and women are also part of the CSWR. Among these are the papers of the following individuals and families: Baca, Bursom, Fall, Fergusson, Fountain, Huning, Illfeld, Kelleher, Luna, Ortíz y Pino, Otero, Prichard, Prince, Rodey, Romero, Ross, Seaburg, and Spiegelberg.
The Grassroots Activism Project in 1996 initiated a counterpart to the papers of elected officials. These collections reflect the activism of grassroots leaders and organizations in the Southwest. Collections include the papers of Reies López Tijerina, Frank Sánchez, Francisco “Kiko” Martínez, and American Indian Movement organizers Robert Robideau and Kay Cole.
Political Archives is part of the CSWR Manuscript holdings and the materials are available for research in the Anderson Reading Room. Photo duplication and scanning services are available.
