Using the Center
The Center for Southwest Research actively promotes use of its collections consistent with the handling requirements and nature of the materials. The CSWR collections are housed in closed stacks and great care is taken to ensure they are preserved so that both current and future scholars and researchers can use them.
We recommend out-of-area patrons call ahead to ascertain the availability and extent of given research materials before visiting the Anderson Reading Room. Phone numbers and e-mail addresses are given with each of the collections, with links to the collections shown below. Although CSWR staff can give general reference assistance, staff cannot do detailed research for patrons. The CSWR does maintain a list of local people willing to do research for patrons on a fee basis. To obtain a copy of this list please call Nancy Brown (505-277-1389) or E-mail her at nbrown@unm.edu
Computer terminals, card files, guides, and other finding aids are available in the CSWR. Patrons should note that not all CSWR materials, including books, are included in the University Libraries' on-line computer data base, LIBROS, therefore, use of the card file, guides, and other finding aids is encouraged to help round out research needs.
Anderson Reading Room Use Policies
We ask your help in preserving the Center for Southwest Research collections for future generations by observing the following policies:
- The ARR and adjacent microfilm area are reserved for users of CSWR materials.
- You may bring a pencil, notebook and/or laptop computer into the ARR. Please keep your identification card and either your copy card or money with you.
- Lockers are provided for all personal belongings. Pens, coats, purses, backpacks, fanny packs, briefcases, and laptop cases are not permitted in the ARR or when using CSWR microfilms. The use of cellular phones in the ARR and adjacent areas is also prohibited.
- Duplication of materials by use of personal copiers, scanners, and recorders is not permitted.
- Non-CSWR books needed for research are allowed in the ARR on a limited basis; they must be checked in and out with the ARR librarian.
- CSWR materials may be used in the ARR only. See the retrieval and duplication policies below for further information.
- You must present a picture ID to the ARR librarian prior to using any CSWR materials.
Retrieval Process
- CSWR materials are housed in closed stacks and must be requested for use in the ARR. Unless otherwise marked, materials located in the ARR proper may be browsed by patrons.
- Please allow adequate time for materials to be retrieved and examined. No materials will be retrieved during the 30 minutes prior to closing.
- A separate paging request form is required for all materials:
- For books, periodicals, microforms, videos and similar items, six titles may be retrieved at one time through the information desk located just outside of the ARR.
- For archival collections, see the ARR librarian for archival request forms and inventories. Up to six boxes may be retrieved at one time, however, only one container may be used at a time.
- Material may be placed on hold for up to three days.
- Please return all materials to the ARR desk when finished.
Duplication Policies
Patrons may request photocopies or other duplicates of materials. Some items cannot be copied due to fragile condition or other restrictions. Copy requests are evaluated on a case-by-case basis. The patron is responsible for complying with all copyright laws and restrictions.
- Books and periodicals in good condition may be copied, one item at a time, by patrons at the CSWR photocopier. Please request permission from the ARR librarian.
- Archival materials (manuscripts, photoarchives, UNM archives, architectural archives, and video and audio materials) are copied by staff only. Please ask the ARR librarian for duplication forms and instructions for marking materials. Prices, processes, and turn-around times differ according to the type of material.
- The use of a camera is allowed under certain conditions. Please check with the ARR librarian.
- Permission to examine archival materials is not an authorization to publish them. Permission to publish must be obtained from the copyright holder.
- All archival materials used in publishing must be properly cited and credited to the CSWR in the following format:
- [Description and date of item]
- [Box and/or folder or item number]
- [Name and number of the collection]
- Center for Southwest Research, University Libraries, University of New Mexico.
If you have any questions about CSWR policies or usage procedures, please ask the ARR librarian on duty.
