How do I find a specific piece of music in the Fine Arts and Design Library? Use a KEYWORD search in LIBROS, entering as much information as you have - for example, composer's name, title opus number, thematic catalog number (e.g., the Köchel number for works by Mozart or the RV number for Vivaldi), key, instrumentation, and genre. Limit your search to the MATERIAL TYPE (music scores, recordings, or visual media) you want. You can also limit by LOCATION (Fine Arts Library) or by BRANCH (UNM Main Campus - Albuquerque). For example, suppose you want to find the score for a particular Schumann symphony; you know that it's in D minor but don't remember the opus or serial number. Click here for a possible search strategy. Some tips: Often, just the composer's name and the opus number, if known, will suffice. For example, to find Brahms' first violin sonata, (opus 78), type in KEYWORD search: brahms 78 However, a less specific search may yield additional results if the piece is included in a larger collection. For example, expand your search for the opus 78 sonata by typing the KEYWORD search brahms violin sonatas (look at the entry for "Three sonatas for violin and piano") Truncate genre terms with an asterisk (*) so that LIBROS will search both singular and plural forms. Examples: sonata*, concerto*, symphon*, string quartet*. The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians can be very helpful in tracking down opus or thematic-catalog numbers. New Grove is shelved in the Fine Arts Library reference area and is also available online for UNM Main Campus computer accounts (three concurrent users). The Fine Arts and Design Library owns complete-works sets for many major composers; individual titles within these sets are not always listed in LIBROS. New Grove can help you locate a specific piece within a composer's complete works. Most importantly, be flexible! Try different strategies if you first search isn't successful. And even more importantly, remember that library staff are here to help! Ask at the Reference Desk (or by email: falref@unm.edu ) for any assistance you may need in finding that piece of music. 6.) Help! I'm having a hard time searching for books about the art of a specific country and time period. Can you give me some pointers? Subject searches can be more precise than keyword searches when searching for library materials about a specific time period and country (or city). We have recently changed many subject headings that describe library materials in the fields of fine arts and architecture to more closely resemble cataloging in other disciplines, especially literature and music. For instance, the OLD subject heading "Drawing--20th century--France--Paris" has been changed to "Drawing, French--France--Paris--20th century." Here are some other examples that show the NEW pattern for searching for time periods combined with countries (or continents), states and cities.

If you know the title of the project or the author, you can do a search on those terms. Otherwise you must do an Author search by department:
