Zimmerman Services Update - Journals lost in the fire

List of Lost Titles (html)  (excel)

On April 30, 2006, there was a fire in the basement of Zimmerman Library. The fire destroyed approximately 30,000 volumes of the journals in the history, ethnic studies, Latin American studies and anthropology areas. While not all volumes of all titles were destroyed, some volumes were lost in each of the titles included on this list. (Due to the size of the list, it takes a few moments to load, please be patient.)

Library staff have completed the initial work on the enhanced list that shows which years were lost. Because of the amount of damage and the pattern of the fire, we will not know the complete extent of the loss until all the journals that were removed for cleaning and salvage are returned to the University. The journals will not be available until the Zimmerman basement area is restored and remodeled which will not be completed before the fall of 2007.

The list is now in a dynamically generated format that can be downloaded into excel. It is a large list and may take a minute or two to generate depending on your internet connection speed. We are furnishing the information in this format in order for you to see the most up-to-date information we have about each title. We will continue to add information as more is known about the availability of replacement formats and decisions are made.

Please note that "M" ,"E", "L" in the columns for microformat, electronic accessibility and alternative location respectively are there as indicators that some of the title is or will be available (when the microformat is returned next year.) That access may not be the same range of years as the dates indicated as lost. Please check Journal One Search. for access to those titles with these indicators to see what dates are available.

The Library is gathering information about replacements for the lost journals. We will work with the campus community to determine which titles are priorities to replace, to determine which formats would be most appropriate, and to coordinate any donations of journals or funds. We appreciate the generous monetary donations and offers of material replacements we have received. We currently cannot accept any physical replacements - we simply do not have any place to store them.
