The University of New Mexico University Libraries have been a depository for federal documents since Territorial days, and has been a Regional Depository since 1968. As a Regional depository, the library receives everything available on deposit from the Government Printing Office and retains it permanently. The Collection in the Government Information numbers over 400,000 documents in paper format and over 1 million sheets of microfiche. The documents are arranged by the Superintendent of Documents classification system. Government Information Reference service is available at the Combined Service Point in Zimmerman Library. Most of the collection is available for circulation. Some of the collections which cover scientific and technical information are located in the Centennial Science and Engineering Library.
It is a rich source of materials for all of the sciences and social sciences, and has a surprising amount of information on the humanities from agencies such as the National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution and Library of Congress. By law the depository must make the documents available to the public and one out of every three users is a member of the community. Local and University patrons look for statistics, tax forms, status of legislation, contracting with the federal government, check on proposed and "in force" regulations, and a myriad of other details which they can find in government publications.
For access to government information users may search LIBROS, UNMGL's on-line catalog containing Government Printing Office records from 1976 to date. Earlier or more specific information is accessible through the use of special indexes located in the Zimmerman Library Reference area.
The Government Information staff provides a high level service to all who need assistance with the materials. Most documents circulate and are checked out at the main circulation desk. Non-University individuals can arrange for borrowing privileges with Zimmerman Circulation Department. Reference staffing is available, click here for information about current hours.
Telephone calls for specific information can be made to "Ask a Librarian" at 505.277.9100. If more complex searching is required we can arrange to assist users in the most expeditious ways to search by using manual and electronic indexes.
