Online Archive of New Mexico

Images of Historical Documents

Some of the historical documents listed on the Online Archive of New Mexico have been digitized, including letters, photographs and pamphlets. They are available for viewing directly from the Finding Aids. These are scanned images (facsimilies) of the original documents, not searchable text files.

  • The finding aids that have images attached are identified on the browse list for each participating institution with camera graphic.
  • When you link to these finding aids, you will find thumbnail images of the facsimiles located mostly in the Contents List. Some images may also be found under Scope and Content.
  • Click on the thumbnail to open the document image in a new browser window. It may take a few minutes to download.

How to Display Images

To maintain high resolution, we offer the images in the Portable Network Graphics (PNG) format. To get the best PNG image display with the ability to enlarge the image for reading, you may need to upgrade your browser or use a plug-in viewer.

  • Micosoft's Internet Explorer version 5.5 and above will display PNG files without using an external viewer. If you have an earlier registered version of Explorer, contact Microsoft for information on upgrades. Microsoft Explorer.
  • Netscape's Navigator will display PNG files only if you have a viewer installed on your computer. Quick View Plus, which usually comes with the Microsoft Windows operating system, will open the images in Netscape and allows for enlarging. You may need to configure Quick View Plus to work with Netscape Navagator.
  • Opera Web Browser displays PNG files and allows for enlarging the images. It is available as freeware or as inexpensive shareware. Download Opera.
