TIP SHEET FOR COMMERCIAL BINDING:
PRESERVEWELL PERIODICALS: (Pers) : Either double-fan glued or oversewn. Patterns are taken from INNOPAC. Library Bindery staff selects the color and any special instructions for the commercial binder. Both the color and any special instructions are included in the INNOPAC pattern. Bindery slips are printed from INNOPAC and inserted into the material. The commercial binder does the standard periodical collation, which includes checking the material for sequence, completeness, and insuring the material is bindable. The material is bound in grade F buckram covers made with Davey Binders Board. The commercial binder has the option to decide whether to utilize the existing sewing in the piece, or to perform new sewing, through the fold. This decision will be based on the library leaf attachment decision tree. The commercial binder also decides where to place the print on the spine. The horizontal location is called a slot, a system which is standardized throughout the United States. Currently, the library has a no-trim binding policy for periodicals. PRESERVEWELL MONOGRAPHS: (Standard Monographs) : Either double-fan glued or oversewn are options included in the basic price. For text blocks that are sewn, the binder may decide to retain the original sewing. The Library Bindery selects the cloth color for everything but Economy Monographs and volumes in series, which are a standard 538G (teal blue). The material is bound in F grade buckram covers made with Davey Binders Board. Up to 5 lines of call number are included in the basic price. Prices vary depending on the height and thickness of the item. There is an additional charge for anything more than 2.5 inches thick. Items are collated at the bindery and may have special instructions, such as making pockets for maps, charts or other supplemental material. The library has a no-trim binding policy for all material of this type. ECONOMY MONOGRAPHS: (Econo/Monos) : Either double-fan glued or oversewn. The sewing is an option. The binder chooses the cloth color, usually teal. Covers are made in grade C linen cloth and Davey Binders Board. If the material requires any sort of special work such as pockets or mending, the binder will upgrade the item to the Preservewell Monograph category. STANDARD MYLARS: (Stand/Mylars) : All items are automatically untrimmed and the original sewing is preserved if possible. If the item is glued, the binder mills the back to create a gluing surface and double-fan-glues the book. Material for this category must not be larger than 15 1/2" high or a maximum thickness of 1". The original cover is removed, laminated with a clear film, and glued onto Davey Binders Board to make the hard cover. The original cover must be totally intact for this process. ECONOMY/MYLAR: (Econo/Mylar) : The item is bound in its existing condition ("as-is"), in the order received from the Library, with no collation by the commercial binder. The binder will trim 1/8" on all four margins of all books in this category, requiring the Library to examine each book to verify that the margins are adequate for trimmmg. The binder will remove the original cover, laminate it with a clear Mylar film, and glue it to Davey Binders Board to create the hard cover. A paperback's cover must be in one piece, totally intact, in order to use this process. Material in this category cannot require any special work such as pockets or foldouts. DISSERTATIONS AND THESES: (Diss or Theses) : Bindery collates and double-fan glues with an oversewn option. Received at the end of each semester, Library Bindery takes about a week to sort the material, assign call numbers, collate and process it for the commercial binder. The material is bound in grade F buckram covers made with Davey Binders Board. Dissertations are bound in color #192G (maroon) and theses are bound in color #990G (black).
DEFINITION OF TERMS:
PVA ADHESIVES: All of the adhesives the commercial binder uses are poly-vinyl acetate, meaning that they are acid-free and compatible with each other. TRIM: The binder will trim material on all four margins when binding. NO-TRIM: The binder will not trim any part of the material and will bind it together in the order that it is published. The edges are not smoothed, thus preserving material with narrow margins. DOUBLE-FAN GLUED: Material is separated into loose pages and every page is glued. OVERSEWN: The material is machine-stitched together into quarter-inch groups.
TIP SHEET FOR IN-HOUSE BINDING
PAMS: (Pams) : A pressboard binder closest in size to the pamphlet or booklet cover is selected, cutting the Pam if needed. This process is chosen for booklets under 100 pages or less than a 1/4 inch thick. PAMPOCKETS: Used for material that is too brittle for Pam-binding, and less than a 1/4 inch thick. Library Bindery removes the sticky strip from the Pam. A pocket is attached to the back cover of the Pam and the pamphlet is inserted. MENDING: Done for any material needing some sort of temporary repair, such as a torn spine, frayed corners, or separation of the book block from the spine. The Library Bindery uses cloth book tape, matching the color of the covers as closely as possible, and may glue parts of the book back together. Sometimes pages are mended with a special clear tape. TIP-INS: Done for items that need to have an errata sheet, title pages, and contents (TPCs), indexes, and/or xeroxed pages added to the text of a book. Material may be added to the front back, or any part of a book.Generally, limited to 20 or fewer pages. BOXES: Materials are boxed when they are: 1) too brittle to bind (the pages are dry and break when folded), 2) the material is beyond repair, and/or 3) the binding is disintegrating. Boxes are made from flat sheets of heavy, acid-free paper cut to the size of the material, glued together, and fastened by a velcro coin. VELOBINDS: (Velos) Velos are opaque or clear plastic covers fastened by a clip at the left margin. The process is used when the material is either too thick or too thin for Pam-binding, or at the selector's discretion. The Velo process is performed at the Library's Copy Center. Upon the materials return the Library Bindery staff sends them for marking, and then to Catalog Maintenance for an OCR number, or to Circulation for discharge from binding status in INNOPAC. The Velo process usually prevents later binding options, since the clipping ruins the margins.
