Services and Assistance > Recalling Items Checked-Out to Another Patron

This page explains how to request an item currently checked out to another patron be recalled for your use. Items that have been checked-out for more than 30 days are eligible to be recalled. Once your request has been placed, a notice will be sent to the patron who currently has the item checked-out. This notice will ask the patron to return the item by a certain date, usually five days from the date the notice is sent. When the item is returned, a notice will be sent to you informing you to come to the Circulation Desk in the library where the item is shelved and check out the item you have requested. The date by which you must pick up the item will be listed on the notice. It is usually ten days from the date the notice is sent. If the patron fails to return the item by the date requested, the patron's library account will be blocked and substantial bills will added to their account.

Contact UNM University Libraries for additional assistance or send an e-mail to libacc@unm.edu. with any questions.

Requesting the Recall of an Item Through the LIBROS Online Catalog
When an item is checked-out, a due date will appear in the status field of the LIBROS Online Catalog. If you would like to use the item, follow the "REQUEST" link in the "LIBROS Navigation Bar" (at top and the bottom of the screen). You will be prompted to enter your name and patron ID number . Follow the online prompts to recall the item.

Fines and Penalties
To facilitate the prompt return of recalled library material, a lost book bill will be generated and library privileges will be suspended if the item is not returned within twelve days of the recall due date. This bill will include the replacement cost of the item, and a $25.00 billing fee. When the recalled library material is returned, library privileges will be reinstated and the replacement cost and will be removed from the patron's account. The remaining billing fee and an overdue fee of $25.00 per recalled item must be paid at the Bursar's Office. Book donations will not be accepted in lieu of fines and fees for recalled material. If the item is not returned, but the charges are paid in full, library privileges will be reinstated, and the charges will be removed from the patron's account.
