Open Study Carrels
Open study carrels are small study desks. Carrels are assigned to individual UNM graduate students and faculty members for individual study. Assignments cannot be made to departments or colleges of the University, and are not transferable.

Assignments are made for one semester only, but may be renewed as long as continued need is demonstrated. Occupants should make use of their assigned study space. The Library staff will maintain occupancy checks, and any carrel not used regularly will be subject to reassignment to the next candidate on the waiting list. Typing is not permitted, but "laptops" may be used if other library patrons are not disturbed by their use. Obtain application forms at the circulation desk. The library will assume no responsibility for any materials left in a carrel.

Locked Study Carrels
Locked carrels are small study rooms. Carrels are assigned to individual UNM doctoral candidates enrolled for dissertation hours (course number 699) and faculty members for individual study. Since requests for carrels significantly outnumber the carrels available, assignments are made on the basis of demonstrated need for extensive research use of library materials. Assignments cannot be made to departments or colleges of the University, and are not transferable. Applications from doctoral candidates will be accepted when the candidate is accepted to the doctoral program, but an assignment will not be made until the candidate is actively engaged in writing a dissertation. Carrel assignments will be made approximately in the proportion of 90% to doctoral candidates and 10% to faculty members. Within this policy a first-come, first-served basis is applied.

Assignments are made for one semester only, but may be renewed as long as continued need is demonstrated. Occupants should make use of their assigned study space. The Library staff will maintain occupancy checks, and any carrel not used regularly will be subject to reassignment to the next candidate on the waiting list. Each carrel will normally be assigned for the use of two persons. This will necessitate cooperative schedules for use and sharing of storage space. Typing is permitted, but the door should be kept closed. Windows may be partially covered, but Library staff members must be able to see easily whether the carrel is occupied at any time and by whom it is occupied.

A deposit of $25.00 will be required for issuance of a key to a locked carrel. This deposit is refundable when the key is surrendered. Obtain application forms and keys at the circulation desk. If a key is not returned at the end of the assignment period, or upon request, or if an assignment is terminated for reason of misuse, the deposit will be forfeited. A lost key should be reported to circulation supervisor immediately upon discovering the loss. Any personal materials left in a carrel after an assignment has expired or has been terminated will be stored for a reasonable length of time. The library will no longer be responsible for such materials after a written notification to this effect is mailed. The library will assume no responsibility for any materials left in a carrel.

Charging Items to Study Carrels
Special carrel charge cards can be obtained at the circulation desk. Select needed books and take them to your carrel. Complete a carrel charge card for each, filling in all information (except where spaces have been crossed out). Leave the complete carrel charge cards stapled together upright in the books for which they have been filled out. All carrels are checked periodically by a Library clerk who will mark the due date on both parts of the charge cards and will remove the smaller (top) cards to be input as the circulation record for the book which has been placed in the carrel. Library books which have been left in carrels, but not checked out to the carrel, will be removed.

Although a two-week loan period is marked on the cards, books, government documents, and bound periodicals charged to carrels may remain there without needing renewal, and without incurring fines, as long as the carrel is renewed on a timely basis by the patron to whom it has been assigned. Books from the general collection, government documents, and bound periodicals are the only types of materials which may be charged to a carrel. Reserve materials, Current periodicals, Reference materials, or microforms should never be left in any carrel. Only books which have been charged to the carrel should be left in an open carrel. No other items of any type should be left in an open carrel.

If you have books charged out to your carrel which you want to take out of the Library, you must take the books to the Circulation counter where they will be discharged from the carrel and charged out to your personal library borrowers account. If you have books charged out for home use which you want transferred to a carrel, bring the books to the Circulation counter to have them discharged from your personal library account and then follow the procedures outlined above.

If another library patron should need a book which has been charged to your carrel, at the end of the indicated loan period (two weeks from the check-out date), it will be discharged and given to the patron who has requested it. If you still need the book in question, you may go to the circulation desk and recall the book from the patron who now has it. If a faculty member has requested that a book in your carrel be placed on reserve, it may be removed at any time, and will then be available for your use at the reserve counter). Whenever a book is removed from your carrel by a circulation staff member, a note will be left explaining the reason for the removal.

When you finish using a book which has been charged out to your carrel, turn the long carrel charge card upside down so that the words "TO BE DISCHARGED" are showing. A library clerk will remove the book and discharge it from the carrel. All remaining books will be removed when your assignment to the carrel has expired, but you are expected to request their removal as soon as you finish with them, rather than permitting them to remain in your carrel unused.

Group Study Rooms
Any University student, faculty, or staff member may use the group study rooms. Group study rooms are intended for the occasional use of a group of people needing a place in which to work or study where talking is permitted. A room may be assigned to an individual when no group has requested its use. Assignment is given on a first come, first served basis. Reservations in advance are encouraged. Reservations may be made up to one week in advance. Group study rooms will not be assigned to any individual or group on a regular basis. Group study rooms B95, B94, B96 294, 295, and 296 are scheduled through the Reserve Desk at 277-4636. ID cards must be surrendered in order to obtain a room key.

Lockers
Lockers are available for library patrons on a per semester basis. Lockers must be renewed each semester (Spring, Summer and Fall). Failure to renew your locker by the designated renewal date will result in the forfeiture of your locker. Books may not be checked out to lockers. Only library books which are currently checked out to your personal account can be placed in your locker. The only lock which may be used on your locker is the lock which has been issued to you by the Library. (Non-Library locks will be forcibly removed from Library lockers.) Any misuse of your lock or locker will result in the forfeiture of your $25.00 locker deposit. Your name will automatically be added to the large locker list when a small locker has been assigned to you.
