Art education is a field with strong interdisciplinary ties. Researchers may need to consult sources in a number of subject areas, such as the arts, education, psychology, psychiatry, tests and measurements, sociology, public administration and museum studies. The Library has subject pages for many of these areas. This guide is not meant to be comprehensive; consult with a reference librarian for other suggestions.
The items in this guide are shelved in Zimmerman Library and the Fine Arts Library. Call numbers preceded by “ZIM” are shelved in Zimmerman Library. Items with call numbers preceded by “FAL” can be found in the Fine Arts Library. Ask for assistance regarding specific locations within these libraries.
This page is supplemented by the Art, Art History and Photography, Education, and Psychology pages.
Periodical indexes and abstracts are used to identify articles in journals, newspapers and magazines. Indexes and abstracts are available in print and electronic format; some of the latter provide full-text articles. Some important online indexes to articles on art and art history, including specialized and interdisciplinary resources, are listed below. Additional databases are listed on the Research Databases and Indexes by Name page. The Journals and magazines section has links to other periodical resources.

The Library Catalog (LIBROS) provides location information for books, journals, maps, microforms, sound recordings, videos, and similar items owned by the UNM Libraries and other New Mexico member institutions. Materials that are not located in the Library Catalog (LIBROS) can be requested through InterLibrary Loan.
When searching for books on a topic in LIBROS, try a KEYWORD search. KEYWORD searches can be truncated to search alternate word endings (for example, artist* will retrieve: artist, artists, artistic, artistically, etc.).
After finding relevant records on LIBROS, try additional searches by using the subject headings for those records.

Search Journal One Search for holdings. Years of coverage vary per title. Copies of articles in titles that the UL does not own can be requested through Interlibrary Loan. Due to the April 30, 2006 fire in Zimmerman Library, print journals previously located there are currently unavailable. All the surviving periodicals and microforms were shipped out of state for cleaning and further assessment. An opening date for the heavily damaged basement level has not yet been determined. None of the journals or microforms sent for cleaning and restoration will be returned until the basement can be re-opened. Please use Interlibrary Loan to request copies of articles from these publications. ILL is only available to UNM students, faculty and staff.
