Historical Material
While our collection holds a number of maps that would be considered historic for various places around the world, we do have some specific collections for historic research:
- Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps for New Mexico. We have many of the Sanborn maps in hard copy, viewable in-house.
- Government Land Office Plat Maps, New Mexico (partial coverage) late 1800s/early 1900s.
- USGS Topograhic Maps, various states, partial coverage, late 1800s to 1940.
- New Mexico State Highway Maps, 1923-1959.
- New Mexico and the Southwest, 1700s to 1940.
- General Land Office
- Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps for New Mexico -- Remote access to on-line Sanborns is available only to UNM affiliates (faculty/staff/students). Community patrons must use our collections in-house.
Aerial Photography
MAGIC has an extensive collection of aerial photography for the City of Albuquerque ranging in dates from 1969 to 1990, in various scales. Some areas of New Mexico are available with various dates and scales.

Computer Mapping
MAGIC has ArcGIS version 9 available to users. There is also an easy-to-use tutorial available. You can generate an ArcView map
if the necessary data sets are available. The only charge for this service is the cost of printing (see prices below).
MAGIC has extensive resources available for use with ArcGIS.
Climatology information, place name finders, and an interactive introduction to topographic mapping are just some of the other materials available on CD-Roms.

Copy Services
MAGIC has a full-sized (36” wide) map copier that can be used to make copies of any of the maps in our collection. It is not a color copier, but the black and white images are sufficient for most uses. The cost of copies is $.75 per square foot of the map being copied. We are able to mail copies if you are not in the Albuquerque area, with a $4.00 shipping/handling fee. E-mail or call us with any questions or requests.
For color prints, we have a high-resolution scanner that can be used in conjunction with an edge-to-edge color printer. Scanning is free. Costs for color copies are:
- 8.5” x 11” -- $ 1.00
- 11” x 17” -- $ 1.50
- 13” x 19” -- $ 2.50
For larger jobs, we have a 44” wide color printer. Printouts are $4.00 per square foot.
