Information and literature by and about American Indians is voluminous and varied. The UNM General Library (which includes the Fine Arts Library, Parish Memorial Library - the business and economics library, Centennial Science and Engineering Library, and Zimmerman Library - the education, humanities, and social sciences library) has strong collections on Native Americans. Within Zimmerman Library, materials can be found in the circulating general stacks, the periodicals and microforms area, the Reference Department, the Center for Southwest Research, and the Government Information Department. Zimmerman Library has sources in all formats on indigenous peoples of North America, including books, periodicals, newspapers, government information, maps, audiovisual materials, manuscripts, photographs, and electronic resources. In addition, Reference Department staff can show you how to find information on the Internet on Native Americans and other indigenous peoples.
This guide lists selected sources of information available primarily in the Zimmerman Reference Department. Many of these resources will assist you in beginning your research.
Remember that the terms “American Indians” and “Native Americans” have been used to represent peoples from hundreds of different unique cultures. When you conduct research on a specific nation or tribe, you will often need to use the specific name or names of the group and/or the geographic region in which the group lives as search terms.

The Library Catalog (LIBROS) provides location information for books, journals, maps, microforms, sound recordings, videos, and similar items owned by the UNM Libraries and other New Mexico member institutions. Materials that are not located in the Library Catalog (LIBROS) can be requested through InterLibrary Loan.
Most materials fall within the following Library of Congress call number range:
E 51-99 Indians of North America
Due to the interdisciplinary nature of Native American studies, materials will also fall in some other call number ranges (e.g., Indian Law is in KF; Native American music is in ML 3557; Native American literature falls in PS 508).
For best results, search LIBROS and other databases by keyword when searching by topic. For searches on specific tribes or nations, use variant terms (e.g., navajo, dine, pueblo indians)
